Waterfront councillor and former MP Alison Raynsford has promised Plymouth City Council will look at a range of options to tackle the damage being caused to The Hoe by disposable barbecues.

Local residents have voiced their concerns, highlighting the environmental damage and fire risks associated with the single-use grills. One lamented: "The Hoe is a beautiful place, but these barbecues are ruining it."

The Hoe is increasingly scorched and blighted by revellers, with a patchwork of blackened and bare patches now scarring the once-lush grass - and fire crews have been called to two blazing bin incidents in the last two months. It’s led to public outcry and calls for decisive action.

Councillor Raynsford has addressed the issue in a full council meeting, emphasising the fire hazards and the detrimental impact on the grass.

She stated on the social media platform X: “Raised problems in full council with disposable BBQs on Plymouth Hoe and other sites. Fire risk in dry weather, serious damage to grass, damage to bins are just some of the problems. Very difficult to police but PCC will look at a range of options.”

To date Plymouth City Council has not implemented a formal ban on disposable barbecues. Current guidelines advise against their use, but enforcement remains lax. The council's Facebook page unhelpfully notes: "Gas BBQs are not allowed. Never use petrol, paraffin or biofuel."

The environmental implications extend beyond local aesthetics. A recent article in The Guardian highlighted the broader dangers of disposable barbecues, citing incidents of injuries and environmental degradation. The article underscores the urgency for regulatory measures to mitigate these risks.

As summer approaches, the pressure mounts on Plymouth City Council to take definitive action. Implementing a ban on disposable barbecues could preserve the integrity of The Hoe and ensure the safety of its visitors. The Beagle and residents await a response that balances public enjoyment with environmental stewardship.
