We guess they must’ve flooded the engine, and got water in the carburettor. But why was there a £475,000 Rolls Royce Phantom in the Lido today (Friday)?

There were cameras, ladies with clipboards, and lads in high-vis vests all in attendance. And the pool was mostly closed all day (although Beagle correspondent Mona C Saplanski managed to take a dip.)

Rumours were rife. Was it an Oasis music video? Filming an episode of Bergerac? Or a high class promo shoot as part of a “Mohamed Al-Fayed is innocent” campaign?

In fact today was all part of a shoot for Rolls Royce as part of what the company says will be an “exciting global moment” to be revealed later.

  • In the late 1960s, during a party, Keith Moon - drummer with rock band The Who - allegedly drove a car which is most often cited as a Rolls Royce (but may have been a Lincoln) into a hotel swimming pool. The story became a symbol of rock and roll's wild and unrestrained nature. The image of a Rolls Royce in a pool was later used as the cover art for the Oasis album "Be Here Now," further cementing the story in popular culture.
