Residents Fume Over Soaring Hoe Parking Fees

A new petition is rapidly gaining traction as residents and local businesses voice their outrage over a recent significant increase in parking charges in and around The Hoe. The hike, which saw the removal of a popular early morning discounted rate, is already being blamed for deterring visitors and threatening the economic vitality of the waterfront.
The petition, initiated by resident Debbie Tucker, highlights how the "enjoyable day out" of swimming and visiting local cafes has now become "too expensive". Tucker stated, "This change is not favourable for our community and could have significant negative implications on our local businesses and tourism."
Just two months ago, parking at The Hoe offered a "reasonable rate" that encouraged both residents and tourists to utilise facilities and frequent surrounding establishments. This included a concessionary rate for those parking at 8 am or before, allowing them to stay until 10 am. The abrupt removal of this option and the subsequent price surge have prompted fears that visitors will now seek "less expensive alternatives."
Nicola, a local swimmer, expressed her frustration, stating, "The new charges are affecting local businesses who enjoy the trade outside of the busy working day. As a swimmer, I feel the council are targeting the local community who enjoy the benefits of cold water to make money."
Another frequent visitor, Annette, echoed these sentiments: "The increase of parking fees on The Hoe is just madness. The cost of visiting the swimming pool and parking will make it too expensive to attend… Plymouth council just don’t care."
The impact is also being felt by those visiting in the evenings. James recounted his recent experience: "I attended an evening meal at a local hotel the other evening and I was shocked at how much they wanted to charge for an evening's parking. I won't be visiting The Hoe again for some time."
Data suggests that increased parking fees can lead to a decline in visitors and a subsequent drop in local revenue. Petition organiser Debbie Tucker urged the local council to "revert parking charges in The Hoe, The petition has more than 800 signatories and continues to gather names, signalling a strong community desire for a reversal of the contentious new fees.
