A powerful new police boat has been launched this week in Plymouth to help the Devon force tackle organised crime and attend incidents on the water.

The Marine Policing and Underwater Search team government-funded boat, named Neptune, is a significant upgrade to the force’s current marine capability.

It will be operated by the force’s team of specially trained marine police officers, who are responsible for responding to incidents on the water, as well as using their expert knowledge to investigate marine-related crimes.

Isle of Wight boatbuilder Cheetah Marine supplied the vessel. The bespoke power catamaran was custom designed with advanced features, powered by twin 350hp Yamaha outboard engines. It has a range of nearly 200 miles and seating for 10 personnel. It includes a long-range stabilised infra-red HD camera and underwater drone capabilities to enhance search and evidence-gathering operations.

It is larger and more stable than previous boats, allowing the force to stay at sea longer and operate more safely in adverse weather and extreme conditions.

Devon and Cornwall Police said Neptune’s operational duties will include coastal patrols, rapid response to maritime incidents, protection of historical wreck sites, and partnership operations with agencies such as HM Coastguard and the RNLI.
