Petition Gains Momentum to Protect Mountbatten Beach

wild swimmer and sea‑lover Grace Stickland has launched a Change.org petition asking Plymouth City Council to designate Mountbatten Beach as a bathing area, and it’s already drawing a healthy response: with more than 490 verified signatures and counting.
Despite its popularity, the beach remains unofficial and thus lacks the protections afforded to designated bathing spots.
Grace’s appeal clearly resonates - in her petition she captures the spirit of Mountbatten Beach - she says it’s where paddle‑boarders, dog‑walkers, sun worshippers and adventurous wild swimmers mingle against the backdrop of calm waters and sweeping views.
Why does it matter? With the right status, the beach would qualify for regular water‑quality monitoring by the Environment Agency, potentially the introduction of lifeguards, and clearly marked safe swimming zones. These measures would make the beach safer and boost its appeal—without harming its natural charm.
Interestingly, this isn’t uncharted territory for the area - Firestone Bay was officially recognised as a bathing water back in 2023, thanks in part to a campaign by local MP Luke Pollard.
As sign-ups roll in, Grace’s plea for council action feels increasingly urgent—and buoyed by community support. Fancy a safe, salt-solid swim with peace of mind? Now’s the time to show your support.
