A Coastguard search and rescue helicopter landed on Plymouth Hoe today after winching a casualty off HMS Sutherland in the Sound.

The injured person was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital.

Sutherland is based at Devonport but was at sea when the drama unfurled.

The Sikorsky rescue helicopter is too large to land at Derriford hospital's helipad.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "At 11.09 today, HM Coastguard was called to assist a casualty aboard a vessel at Plymouth Sound. An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, and the casualty was taken to a Helicopter Landing Site for onwards travel to hospital."

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: "A member of HMS Sutherland was transported to hospital with the assistance of HM Coastguard on Tuesday (13 January). The person suffered serious injuries which are not thought to be life threatening."

HM Coastguard uses the Sikorsky S-92A helicopter for its rescue operations: a large, all-weather aircraft equipped for 24/7 missions with advanced technology such as infrared cameras, twin hoists, and full medical suites for paramedic care.

HMS Sutherland (F81) is a Type 23 Duke-class frigate of the Royal Navy, known for its primary role in anti-submarine warfare. It has a standard ship's company of around 200 personnel.

Sutherland is equipped with various weapon systems and sensors. Its armament includes anti-air missiles, Harpoon launchers, a 4.5-inch naval gun, 30mm guns, and .50 caliber machine guns. It features Sting Ray torpedo tubes and advanced sonar for anti-submarine warfare.

The ship's company is known as "The Fighting Clan." Five days ago Sutherland bid farewell to outgoing Commanding Officer, Cdr James Wallington-Smith RN, and welcomed new C.O. Commander Kris White RN on board.
