Campaign launched for new Plymouth ice rink

A campaign is underway to build a new dedicated ice arena in Plymouth, addressing the long-standing void of a permanent home for the region's burgeoning ice sports community.

Jonathan List, a player for the Plymouth Phoenix Ice Hockey team, has spearheaded a public petition, articulating the urgent need for a facility that he argues is vital for local athletes and could bring significant economic and recreational benefits to the city.

The Plymouth Phoenix, a team comprising over 40 registered players from across Devon and Cornwall, currently endures the inconvenience of travelling to Bristol for all training sessions and matches. This arduous journey is not unique to the ice hockey team; numerous figure skaters also face the same lengthy commute due to the lack of local facilities.

"Our love for the sport forces us to travel," stated List, highlighting the considerable dedication required from athletes in the region. He further lamented broken promises of a new rink made in the past, which have yet to materialise.

The campaign also points to the economic advantages, including the creation of new jobs, not least for local construction companies involved in the build. With qualified coaches and referees already present in the city and county, Mr. List asserts that Plymouth is primed to embrace and develop ice sports, offering a "stage for this universal love and passion to flourish."

The petition, which has more than 1800 signatories, urges all residents, from dedicated athletes to potential recreational users, to sign in support of the project. "Together, we can bring the world of ice sports closer to home and provide a space for our community to thrive and grow," List concluded, appealing to the public to help turn this vision into reality.
