Breaking News: harbour wall falls victim to Ingrid

Sad to report that the West Hoe harbour wall did not survive Storm Ingrid overnight.

As you may remember, on December 15 The Beagle reported on the severe damage to the eastern wall resulting from Storm Bram.

And previously the wall had been fenced and off and engineers had begun attempts at rectification.

The Grade II listed West Hoe basin and landing jetties have been subject to severe storm damage over the years and have been strengthened and repaired many times.

In 1983 timber strakes with tie bars were added to strengthen the structural walls and in 1994 the northwest corner of the north east leg was reconstructed.

The walls are made of Plymouth limestone – most likely sourced from West Hoe quarry. The inner section – known as the hearting – used was a combination of excavated material with small Plymouth limestone fragments.
