A new New Continental on the cards?
Plans are being developed for the alteration and renovation of the landmark New Continental hotel in Millbay Road, following the submission of a pre-planning application to the city council.
The prominent Victorian building is the city’s largest independently owned hotel.
It was built in the late nineteenth century during Millbay’s heyday and was intended to serve travellers arriving and departing via the docks.
The document submitted to Plymouth Council this week sets out the historic and architectural significance of the building, describing its landmark presence, scale and decorative detailing, as well as its long association with cross-Channel travel and Plymouth’s maritime identity. These factors are identified as central considerations for any future changes to the site.
What is proposed?
At this stage, the proposals are described only in broad terms. The ‘Interim Heritage Statement’ refers to the alteration and renovation of the existing hotel to support its continued and viable use. This includes general upgrading works and the potential for internal reconfiguration, with scope to enhance accommodation provision within the building. The emphasis of the document is on understanding heritage impacts rather than presenting final designs.
The drawings submitted propose a new wheelchair accessible lift, and eight new guest rooms across a small part of the ground and lower-ground floors.
The hotel is owned by the Hajiyianni family, a well-known Plymouth business family with longstanding involvement in the city’s hospitality sector.
